NMB TRUTH: Who is Jay Chernoff?

Updated: Nov 21, 2023

Top 3 Reasons why Jay Chernoff should not be returned to North Miami Beach government:

Chernoff previously served 19 years in office (1989 - 2007) and is asking for another 8 years (his leadership was a disaster):

• Under his “leadership”, while he was an elected official,Chernoff became a tax-evader who owed the IRS tens of thousands of dollars.

• Under his “leadership”, he gave himself and his family lifetime health insurance costing taxpayers millions in benefits. Watch Chernoff admit he continues to receive this "public" benefit after more than 30 years.

• Under his “leadership”, the NMB Water services were infamously crumbling at the time due to lack of maintenance and oversight allowing millions to be embezzled by the director of public services who was sentenced to 12 years in prison.

Here's a quote from VotersOpinion with a quick change from Ray Marin to Jay Chernoff to make the point stronger (when Ray Marin and Jay Chernoff both tried to come back to city government in 2018 but voters rejected them).

After a five month investigation, during which even more tax dollars were discovered to have been stolen, on February 16, 2011 Marty King was arrested, and charged with racketeering, money laundering, and grand theft third degree, to which he pleaded guilty in a Change of Plea and Plea Agreement he made with the Miami State Attorney’s Office.
On March 29, 2011, Marty King was sentenced to 12 years in prison and ordered to pay back $2.3 million in restitution. CBS Miami reported that, “King moved about $2.3 million to a company owned by his wife over the course of 12 years. It was money that was supposed to be used to purchase hundreds of manholes, which remained uninstalled.” King’s wife, Rita, was not criminally charged.
Remember, Jay Chernoff was first elected to the City Council in 1989. He was “retired” by voters in May of 2009. For 12 long years, under Jay Chernoff’s watch, Marty King robbed the city and its utility blind by embezzling millions of dollars from the public coffers. Little wonder the water utility couldn’t come up with the money to upgrade or replace its crumbling infrastructure.
But Jay will tell you there were absolutely no scandals while he was in office.
As you can see, he’s lying.

If North Miami Beach is again under Jay Chernoff's “leadership”, he is committed as a realtor and to return the favor to developers for his campaign victory by working to replace our single family homes with unaffordable luxury condominiums. Chernoff will join Mayor Anthony DeFillipo who has been caught multiple times working for developers while abusing his official authority to give these developers whatever they ask.

North Miami Beach voters deserve to know the truth before they vote in the upcoming November 22nd run-off election between the “Wake Up NMB” candidate Jay Chernoff and the incumbent Commissioner Paule Villard.
